How to Choose Ski Touring Socks

First, I’d like to thank everybody for the comments and questions posed about our last post “How to Avoid Blistered Feet When Backcountry Skiing“. We discussed the impact of boots and socks on preventing blisters, as well as a few tips and tricks to help on the skin track.
Blistered feet are one of the most common injuries for backcountry skiers. Often overlooked, this injury can easily ruin or end a trip in the mountains. Today we are going to go in depth with what I believe to be the best preventative measure; sock selection.
How to choose ski touring socks
The perfect socks for backcountry skiing can be difficult to find as they tend to be designed mainly for downhill skiing. But as you know, most the time spent ski touring is going uphill. Therefore, the ideal socks will be durable, moisture wicking, breathable, and warm for the uphill; but also responsive and reinforced for the downhill. So, how do we go about finding this ideal sock for ski touring?
In this article we will discuss the various factors to consider when you select ski socks to enjoy your next backcountry adventure. The main factors to consider are:
- Fabric
- Thickness
- Reinforcements and Cushioning
- Wicking and Breathability

Fabrics
The best options for ski sock fabrics are:
- Merino Wool
- Synthetic
Note, never wear socks with cotton content when backcountry skiing. The cotton is absorbent and will cling to your skin when wet. This is a common way for blisters to form.
Merino Wool
Merino wool is a very popular choice for winter base layers. It is breathable, odor-resistant, and has a great warmth to weight ratio. Merino wool is a good choice for ski socks as it is very effective in moving moisture away from your feet and releasing it in to the air.
One drawback is that merino wool tends to be less flexible than its synthetic counter-parts. This can lead to premature splitting on the high wear zones (heel and toe). However, reinforced padding in these zones can make up for the lack in flexibility (and add some comfort too!).
Synthetic
Synthetic ski socks come in a variety of polyester, nylon, and spandex blends. They offer quick-drying capabilities, warmth, and flexibility. In essence, synthetic materials attempt to mimic the properties of wool to trap warmth and wick moisture.
The main drawback to synthetic socks is they will begin to feel wet much sooner than wool. The synthetic materials are not as absorbent, although they are effective at moving moisture away from the skin.
Thickness
Sock thickness is a tough one to nail down. It really does come down to a personal preference on comfort and responsiveness. However, there are some general guidelines I can share with you.
Socks can be “too thick”
General knowledge will lead you to believe that the thicker the sock, the warmer the sock. However, despite the logical sense of that statement; if a sock is too thick it may make you colder.
Your feet require proper circulation to stay warm. When a sock is too thick it could restrict blood flow to your feet. Combine this with a snug-fitting boot and you may find your feet much colder and less comfortable than the plush appearance of the thick sock lead you to believe.
Socks can be “too thin”
This statement is a bit more obvious. A sock that is too thin will not keep you warm enough. More importantly, however, is that a thinner sock may easily break under the pressure of thousands of tiny impacts during a backcountry ski trip.
The goldilocks of sock thickness
It follow then that the “right” thickness is not too thick and not to thin. But what does this mean for you?
I suggest trying out a few different options to see what feels best on your feet. As I said before, the thickness factor really does come down to feel. However, another factory to consider is the cushioning or reinforcements on the socks.
Reinforcements and Cushioning
Cushioning
Ski socks are designed with varying thickness of cushioning on the shin, under the foot, and on the heel and toe. In general, the thicker the cushioning, the warmer but less responsive the sock will be.
So, if you want an ultra-responsive sock for pinpoint precision on your turns, opt for a sock with light cushioning. If your main concern is warmth, opt for medium-heavy cushioning. Keep in mind the points on thickness stated above apply to thickness of cushioning as well.
Reinforcements
The cushioning on the socks also serve as reinforcements to prevent the sock from breaking apart. So for backcountry skiing in particular, it is good to have a sock with reinforcements on the heel and toe as these areas wear down quickly when hiking up mountains.
Furthermore, make sure any reinforcements are added with flat or integrated seams. A reinforced heel won’t do you any good if there is a protruding seam that causes a terrible blister anyway.
Wicking and Breathability
Any base layer or article of clothing worn close to the skin should efficiently move moisture away from your body. This is particularly important when ski touring as your feet start to sweat. If moisture builds up on your socks you will quickly feel the rubbing against your skin which will cause nasty blisters. So, make sure your socks will allow moisture to move away from your feet and escape in to the air.
Conclusion
The most common demands on socks for ski touring are durability and warmth. But don’t forget to consider blister prevention as well. So, choose carefully and consider all the factors we’ve discussed.
A good balance of the four factors above will result in a ski sock that will keep your feet warm and prevent blisters when ski touring.
