In this new series we bring you Savvy Stories – trip reports from the Savvy Touring team. We dive deep in to the details of our adventures and bring you the good, the bad, and the ugly of our vertical bound ways.
Today we discuss a trip from January 2021 where we set out with the intention of hitting one of the most reputable couloirs in the sea to sky corridor; the Aussie Couloir on the south side of Joffre Peak. However, circumstances that followed led us to making our way up Aussie’s lessor loved and slightly smaller cousin; the Kiwi Couloir.
We set out early in the morning on a crisp January day. One of the goals of this trip was to create a promo video for Savvy Touring. So we took our time getting shots of the crew putting on the gear and having a good time.
After a short push from the highway through the forest we found ourselves in the boulder field created by a massive landslide in 2019. This landslide wiped out one of Joffre’s most extreme lines; the Central Couloir. Now, pro skier and seriously savvy sender Cody Townsend, can claim to be one of the last to ever descend the Central Couloir.
As devastating as the landslide was to the landscape, it actually made this portion of the access very enjoyable with open terrain and beautiful views. Not a bad way to start the day.
Before long we had found our way up to Keith’s Hut where we were greeted by a friendly family enjoying their weekend in the mountains. Most impressively, they had their 5 year old with them on a custom rigged touring set – a future sender in the making for sure.
From this point we gained the northeast ridge of Joffre, also known as the Motel 66 ridge, heading up towards the anniversary glacier. When we got to the bottom of the glacier we stopped for a beautiful mountain lunch (no summit lunch on today’s pace!).
From here it looked like the top of the glacier – and therefore the bottom of the couloir – was just a stone’s throw away. Looks can be deceiving in the mountains. An hour and a half later we finally made it to the base of the couloir and got our first look at the monstrous 450m couloir – stunning!
Unfortunately, due to our slower pace this day – in part from the filming, but mostly due to a fever I was pushing through – by the time we got to the base of the Aussie couloir we saw two groups on the couloir already. One group of three was nearing the summit, while the other group of two, who were slightly ahead of us all day, were around the middle of the couloir. This took Aussie out of the equation for us as we did not want to put ourselves underneath these two groups.
After sitting around for a little bit, slightly disappointed, we decided we could make our way up the Kiwi Couloir instead. It’s not as big, not as renown, and doesn’t hit a summit; however, it was still an extremely enjoyable climb and descent. The boot packing up a sustained 45 degree slope was fairly simple, although we were all pretty tired at this point.
The snow quality was perfect for a couloir day – stable but soft on top. The Kiwi Couloir only goes about 200m up before you hit a cliff that is unpassable. There is a small plateau at this point, but it was not big enough for our crew of six. Furthermore, the snow ramp up to the plateau was destroyed by the first three up.
So, the three on top had a tricky drop in to the couloir while the three below had to strap in on precarious ground. Note to self, Kiwi Couloir is too small for six people.
The ride down was short but sweet. A very enjoyable pitch with great snow quality. Was it worth a full day of climbing for a 200m run? ABSOLUTELY! Well, for most of us anyway…
Dylan ran in to the old skin glue problem. Throughout the day the old glue had decoupled from his skins and reattached itself to the base of his skis. If you haven’t guessed already, trying to ski down with glue on your base is no fun whatsoever and not safe on this type of terrain. He ended up butt-sliding his way down to safety where he then rode all the way back to the car with skins on.

After getting back on top of the anniversary glacier, it was all downhill. A fairly enjoyable ride back, although it got a bit choppy at the lower altitude. From sunrise to sundown, we made our way back to the car in the dark. Everyone back safely, and nothing but smiles! Of course we wish we had gotten the chance to climb Aussie, but Kiwi Couloir was definitely a delicious treat and so we have dubbed it “The Forgotten Fuit”.
