Tent Storage Tips

It may seem a bit odd to be putting out this post at the beginning of the winter camping season rather than back in Spring.  However, proper tent storage should be considered every single time you use your tent.  To extend the useful life of your expensive winter tent, the most important thing to consider is how you treat it in-between trips.

Today I’ll share a few simple tips to ensure you get the most out of your tent and extend its life.

  1. Store Completely Dry
Never put away wet gear.  This goes for all your gear not just tents.  Moisture can breed bacteria, and bacteria will degrade the material of your gear.  So, always make sure your tent is fully dried before storing

  2. Store in a Ventilated Area
To further ensure your tent stays dry and bacteria free, never store in an air tight container.  Always leave it out on a shelf or even under your bed – just as long as there is some ventilation for moisture to escape.

  3. Do Not Fold or Roll
If you fold a tent or roll it up, the tent will develop creases.  These creases quickly become weak points in the material that will lose its waterproofing or even tear.  So, when you store your tent; always stuff it in to its storage bag, do not fold or roll.

  4. Fold Poles from the Middle
Tent poles use shock cords that will inevitably stretch out over time and lose their elasticity.  To minimize this stretching, fold up your poles from the middle point and work your way to the ends, rather than going from one end to the other.  If your shock cords are over-stretched, you can always replaced them at your nearest shop or try doing it yourself!

These 4 simple tips will help keep your tent going for years and years so you can keep getting out to enjoy the mountains without breaking the bank for a new tent every few years.

Stay safe, stay Savvy, and get out there!
