Keep Good Posture
I’ve been reminded of this tip recently due to some minor back issues I’ve been having. Keeping good posture is an important tip in all aspects of life. However, if you are carrying a lot of extra weight on your back as you climb up a mountain, this tip becomes extremely important.
Good hiking technique allows your bones and joints to align properly when moving your way up a mountainside. This will decrease the wear and tear on your joints, muscles, and ligaments; preventing back, hip, neck, and leg pain. In addition, by maintaining good posture throughout your hike, you will decrease the amount of energy your body uses in every stride. Therefore, good posture will provide you with more energy for your day, and more specifically, leftover energy to enjoy the ride down!
Here are just a few advantages gained by keeping good posture:
Reduce lower back pain
Fewer tension headaches
Increased energy levels
Less tension on your shoulders and neck
Decreased wear on joint surfaces
Increased lung capacity
Improved circulation and digestion
..and much much more. My personal favorite benefit from the list above is the increase in lung capacity. By avoiding slouching, you allow you chest to expand to its full capacity. This, in turn, allows more blood to circulate freely throughout your body.
So, next time you are out in the mountains, remind yourself to stand up straight and look up, not down.
