Put a Hot Water Bottle in Your Sleeping Bag
Sleeping in below freezing conditions is never the best way to find a good night’s slumber. So, here is a tip for a more comfortable night in the snowy mountains.
First off, this is no replacement for a high quality winter tent, sleeping bag, sleeping pad, and base layers. This is simply a way to stay a little but more warm at night. The essential gear remains essential.
What to do:
- Before you crawl in to your tent for the night, boil some water. Make sure you have the gas to spare for this.
- Poor the boiling hot water in to your Nalgene or similar water bottle and dry to exterior (make sure the lid is 100% leak proof!!)
- Get in to your sleeping bag wearing what you would normally wear for a winter camping night. I like to get down to my base layers.
- Place the hot water bottle inside your sleeping bag. I usually go around my torso area.
- Feel super warm for several hours!
What you may experience is that you are “too hot” at first. This is absolutely a good problem to have when winter camping! Resist the temptation to unzip your sleeping bag a bit or take off layers. The water will not be boiling hot for long; but it will keep you warm for several hours. I find that after about 5-6 hours the water bottle will be at body temperature.
As an added benefit, when you wake up in the morning you will have potable water to start pre-hydrating for the day ahead. No need to struggle your way over to the stream or melt snow first thing in the morning.
So, next time you’re sleeping in the frosty mountains, try putting a hot water bottle in your sleeping bag.

With havin so much content do you ever run into any
issues of plagorism or copyright violation? My website has a lot
of exclusive content I’ve either authored myself or
outsourced but it seems a lot of it is popping it up all over the web without my agreement.
